action

The son of a wealthy media mogul, Israel Goldkiss (Izzy for short), commits suicide in a run-down hotel in Los Angeles . When his father suspects a murder case, FBI investigator Skinner is hired to investigate the matter.

Skinner is known for very unconventional methods. All hotel residents are suspect, including Tom Tom, the mentally retarded friend of the deceased, from whose perspective the story is told. But when he accuses himself to protect Eloise, with whom he fell in love, Skinner doesn't believe him.

When Geronimo, another hotel resident, is arrested, Tom Tom publicly pleads guilty on television. He goes into hiding, hides in the hotel and plans to leave town with Eloise. Tom tells Eloise that he just didn't stop his friend from throwing himself off the roof of the hotel. Later he himself jumps off the hotel roof and dies. On the street, the grieving Eloise meets Skinner, who hugs her.

Reviews

Janet Branagan wrote on www.apolloguide.com that the film does not fulfill what 'big names' like Mel Gibson, Milla Jovovich and Bono promise.

“After a furious beginning with great suggestive visual power, an increasingly disappointing attempt to fuse German auteur cinema with American screen myths. Instead of getting involved in a dramaturgy like a chamber play, the film loses itself more and more in nebulous universality. "

Awards

The film won the Silver Bear at the Berlinale 2000 and was nominated for the Golden Bear . He was also nominated for the German Film Prize in 2000 (Best Film, Best Director). The cameraman Phedon Papamichael was nominated for the Polish Camerimage.

backgrounds

The idea for this film came to Bono, singer from U2, while filming the music video ' Where the Streets Have No Name ', which took place in 1987 on the roof of the Roslyn Million Dollar Hotel in Los Angeles . In 1992 Mel Gibson secured the rights to the script. Gary Oldman , who was supposed to play Tom Tom, worked on the project from time to time . Oldman got out of the project due to the controversy over the person of the director.
