history

Founded in 1975, the center is one of the oldest Buddhist institutions in the German-speaking area. In the spirit of optimism of the early 1970s, some Viennese Buddhists succeeded in acquiring a dilapidated former hotel that was used as a home for the blind in the Erlauftal, about 100 km west of Vienna. A small household of young Buddhists began the renovation.

The center is supported by the non-profit "Association of Friends of the Buddhist Culture and Meditation Center Scheibbs". The transformation of the former ruin into a center of German-speaking Buddhism is thanks to the long-term commitment of the house manager Matthias Köhl and the support of the Austrian Zen master Genro Seiun Osho , whose ashes have been resting there since 2010.

The film How to Cook Your Life (2007) by Doris Dörrie with Edward Espe Brown was partly shot at the Scheibbs Buddhist Center.
