On the occasion of his visit to New York on September 24, 2012, Bujar Nishani appeared before the General Assembly of the United Nations and sharply criticized Serbia , which continues to reject recognition of Kosovo . This speech was received very positively in Albania. Nishani also spoke about the overall political situation in the Balkan Peninsula :

“In my region, the Balkans, different peoples and ethnicities: Albanians, Bosniaks and Croats have suffered from the worst wars that were abused in the name of nationalism. The chauvinistic thoughts justified their ideology and superiority over other peoples by legitimizing the genocides and massacres that followed. The past two decades have shown that turning this page around in Balkan history is not an easy task. "
