Ramiz Tafë Alia (born October 18, 1925 in Shkodra , † October 7, 2011 in Tirana ) was an Albanian politician . He was the last communist head of state in Albania.

Life

Alia was born in Shkodra in October 1925 to a poor Muslim family who later moved to Tirana .

In 1939/1940 he was a member of a fascist youth organization , but soon turned to the communists , which is why he was briefly imprisoned. In 1943 he became a member of the Communist Party . After working as a partisan , he served in the National Liberation Army in 1944 . In 1948 Alia became a member of the Central Committee of the Labor Party of Albania, and in 1950 a member of the Albanian Parliament . From 1952 to 1954 Alia studied at the party college of the CPSU in Moscow . After he became a candidate for the Politburo in 1956 and secretary of the Central Committee of the Labor Party (ideological issues) in 1960, he finally became a full member of the Politburo of the Central Committee in 1961. 1951 to 1955 Alia was a member of the Presidium of the National Assembly and then until 1958 Minister of Education and Culture. In 1958 he became Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the National Assembly and in 1967 Vice President of the General Council of the National Front. On November 22, 1982, Alia was elected as the successor to Haxhi Lleshi in addition to his party functions in addition to the chairman of the Presidium of the National Assembly, thereby exercising the function of head of state. Although this office was only for representative purposes, Alia was the second most powerful man in the country, as he also held the important function of secretary of the central committee of the ruling labor party and was thus the deputy of the dictator Enver Hoxha .

After Hoxha's death in 1985, Alia took over the post of 1st Secretary of the Labor Party of Albania.

After the fall of communism, the Labor Party won the first multi-party election on March 31, 1991. Alia resigned from his party positions and was elected president on April 30, 1991 . Only a year later, the opposition won the early elections. Alia resigned from office on April 3, 1992 and said goodbye to political life. His successor was Sali Berisha ( PD ).

In 2011, Alia died of lung disease at the age of 86 .
