Buncrana ( Irish : Bun Cranncha ) is a small town with 3390 inhabitants (2016) on the Inishowen peninsula in the Republic of Ireland . Buncrana is located on the west coast of the peninsula directly on Lough Swilly , a fjord-like inlet that separates the peninsula in the west from the rest of County Donegal .

Buncrana is the second largest city in County Donegal after Letterkenny and well ahead of Donegal Town and only 22 km away from Derry City in Northern Ireland , with which Buncrana is connected several times a day by Lough Swilly Bus .

The city is the economic center of the region, but offers few special sights. Neds Point Fort, dating from 1799, is located a little west of the city. One of the oldest still operating cinemas in Ireland with an Art Nouveau-style restored facade is located on St. Mary's Road.

The best- known personalities from Buncrana are the bluegrass musician John Cutliffe as well as the playwright Frank McGuinness and the actor Ray McAnally . In May 1991 Eddie Fullerton , a councilor for Sinn Féin , was murdered in Buncrana, and in July 2010 the worst road accident on record in Ireland occurred near Buncrana, killing eight.

The closure of a call center in Buncrana in August 2010 led to the loss of 100 jobs and was described by Mayor Pádraig McLoughlin as “a major blow to an area already struggling with unemployment and emigration”.
