The parliament building was built after Somalia gained independence from Italy and was completed in 1972. It is close to the Somalia Presidential Palace .

The building was badly damaged by air strikes during the Somali Civil War . It was repaired with Turkish help for the opening of parliament in 2012. Reuse was severely affected by car bomb attacks in 2014 and 2017 by the al-Shabaab militia .

The financing of a seven-story new building was guaranteed by Turkey in 2018, the new building is to be built on the site of the demolished old building.
