Burkhart Friedrich Ernst Kroeber (born July 3, 1940 in Potsdam ) is a German translator and occasional author .

life and work

Kroeber studied Egyptology , Romance studies and political science in Tübingen , Heidelberg and Paris , and received his doctorate in Tübingen in 1968 with the work Die Neuägyptizismen vor der Amarnazeit . Since 1971 he has been translating literary and other books mainly from Italian, namely the works of Umberto Eco (since The Name of the Rose ) and Italo Calvino (since When a Traveler on a Winter Night ). From 1977 to 1982 he was an editor at the Carl Hanser Verlag in Munich . Since the 1990s he has also been working on new translations of various classics, from Alessandro Manzoni's historical novel The Brides to Charles Dickens ' last - unfinished - crime novel The Secret of Edwin Drood and John Steinbeck's travel book The Journey with Charley: In Search of America to Giacomo Leopardis Opuscula moralia and Tomasi di Lampedusas Il Gattopardo .

Awards and honors

In 1985, Kroeber received the literary prize of the Kulturkreis der Deutschen Wirtschaft in the BDI , in 2001 the Johann Heinrich Voss Prize for Translation , in 2006 the Translator Prize of the City of Munich and in 2011 the Christoph Martin Wieland Translator Prize and the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany .

In the 2008/2009 winter semester he held the August Wilhelm von Schlegel visiting professorship for the poetics of translation at the Free University of Berlin . In May 2013 he received the German-Italian Translation Prize for his life's work.
