The Club Athlétique Brive Corrèze Limousin ( CA Brive for short ) is a rugby union club from the French town of Brive-la-Gaillarde in the Corrèze department . He plays Top 14 in the highest French league . The home games are played at the Stade Amédée-Domenech . Although the club has never won the French championship title, it has won the Heineken Cup at European level .

history

The club was founded on March 15, 1910. The CA Brive quickly established itself as the strongest team in the Limousin and was represented in the top league for decades, but without any significant success. In 1955, the CA Brive was relegated to the second division, but managed to rise again in 1957.

Eight years later he reached the final of the Challenge Yves du Manoir , in 1965 the final of the championship, but lost both games. In 1972 and 1975 the CA Brive was again in the championship finals, but had to admit defeat to AS Béziers (the second time just by a point). The 1974 Challenge final was also lost.

The CA Brive had its most successful period to date in the second half of the 1990s. The club reached the championship finals for the fourth time in 1996, but lost to record champions Stade Toulousain . Only two teams have played more finals without ever winning, namely ASM Clermont Auvergne (7) and US Dax (5). However, the CA Brive was successful in the Challenge that same year.

In the 1996/97 season, the CA Brive made it to the finals in the Heineken Cup and met the Leicester Tigers in Cardiff ; in the end it was 28: 9 for Brive. Apart from the CA Brive, only one team has won the Heineken Cup without having previously been a national champion, namely the Northampton Saints . One month after the final, the club faced the Auckland Blues , champions of the Super 12 league , in an intercontinental comparison ; the game ended 47:11 for the New Zealanders.

In 1998 the CA Brive was again in the final of the Heineken Cup; but he lost in Bordeaux to Bath Rugby . The club reached the final of the Challenge in 2000, but rose to the second division in the same year. The rise was successful in 2003. In 2012, CA Brive had to relegate again and managed to rise again immediately in the following season.
