Carlo Sacconi (born May 9, 1808 in Montalto delle Marche , Ascoli Piceno province , Italy , † February 25, 1889 in Rome ) was an Italian diplomat and Curia Cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

At the University of Rome he received his doctorate iuris utriusque . He first worked in the diocese of Montalto and headed the seminary as a professor . In 1829 he became canon at the cathedral of Montalto and at the same time worked in the then Congregation for the execution and interpretation of the resolutions of the Tridentine church assembly as well as for recognition of decrees of the provincial synods ( Congregatio cardinalium Concilii Tridentini interpretum ; today: Congregation for the Clergy ), his others Activities were office managers in various institutions, including as a financial auditor in the Nunciature of Piedmont .

Nuncio in Bavaria

On November 13, 1847, he took over the function of an internuncio in Bavaria and then, with his ordination as titular bishop of Nicaea, on May 27, 1851 to 1853, he led the apostolic nunciature in Munich . During this term of office the "First Joint Assembly of the German Bishops in Würzburg" fell, however, this conference met with resistance from the Bavarian episcopate , the Munich Archbishop Karl August Graf von Reisach (1846-55) rejected the proposed conference and had Carlo in the Internuntius Sacconi an important ally. Nuncio in France

Carlo Sacconi then moved to France to head the nunciature there until 1861. On September 27, 1861 he was by Pope Pius IX. Elevated to the cardinal status and appointed cardinal priest of the titular church Santa Maria del Popolo , thus he became cardinal of the curia . In the years 1870 to 1884 he also took on the role of cardinal bishop of the suburbicarian dioceses of Palestrina , Porto e Santa Rufina and Ostia - Velletri .

Cardinal Dean

In 1884 Sacconi was elected cardinal dean, which he remained until his death. Until his death on February 25, 1889, he was also prefect of the then Congregation for Ceremonies .
