Carly Telford (born July 7, 1987 in Jesmond ) is an English football goalkeeper . The goalkeeper has been playing for the Chelsea Ladies again since 2017 and played for the England national team for the first time in 2007 .

Career

societies

Telford played for the Sunderland AFC Ladies from 2002 to 2007 , initially in the Northern Division of the FA Women's Premier League . After the second place was occupied twice in a row, the club was able to finish the 2004/05 season as champions and move up to the National Division. There Sunderland finished in the 2005/06 season the penultimate place and had to relegate to Bristol City, the second in the Southern Division. After a 3-1 home defeat, the return leg in Bristol was won 4-2, which avoided relegation. That took place after the 2006/07 season, because this time there were no relegation games for the table penultimate, but direct relegation. She then moved to Leeds United , finished third with the club and reached her first Women's FA Cup final in May 2008 at the age of 20 , which was lost 3-0 to Arsenal. From the 2008/09 season, the club called itself Leeds Carnegie and finished the season in sixth. The last season of the Women's Premier League Leeds finished fourth and Telford was used in all games.

At the start of the FA Women's Super League in 2011 , Telford moved to the Chelsea Ladies and played there in twelve league games, but only conceded no goals twice. Chelsea finished the season in 6th place. That place was repeated in 2012 , with Telford again not conceding twice and reaching their second Women's FA Cup final. This ended 2-2 after 120 minutes, so there was a penalty shoot-out against the Birmingham City Ladies . In this she was able to hold a shot, but three of her teammates missed, so that this final was not won either.

After the end of the season, she made a detour to Western Australia and played for Perth Glory the first nine games in the W-League season 2012/13. Back in Chelsea, she was only used in six league games in 2013 and only remained without conceding a goal against the later relegated Doncaster Rovers Belles . Chelsea could only just avoid relegation as the penultimate.

For the 2014 season they moved to Notts County. There she was used in 13 games, six times without conceding a goal, u. a. in both games against their ex-club. In the table, however, she could only improve by one place, whereas Chelsea became runner-up, with the Irish Marie Hourihan , her main competitor from the previous season, playing most of the games. In 2015 , both clubs were able to improve by one more place, Telford only conceded twice in twelve league games. But she reached her third Women's FA Cup final with Notts, which was lost 1-0 to her ex-club. In 2016 there were only five league games in which she conceded at least one goal and the season ended in sixth place.

She then returned to Chelsea for the “Spring Series” short transition season in 2017, where she played in seven of the eight games, five of which she finished without conceding a goal. In doing so, she helped Chelsea finish the season first ahead of the Manchester City women with equal points , who had a goal difference 18 goals lower. With the Swedish national team goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl , who has been playing for Chelsea since 2015 , she had a strong competitor at Chelsea, so that Telford only made five appearances in the 2017/18 season, in which she remained twice without conceding. As a "consolation" there was at least the double . The Swede was also in goal in almost all UEFA Women's Champions League games, Telford only played in the round of 32 of the 2018/19 UEFA Women's Champions League in a 5-0 away win against SFK 2000 Sarajevo . In the league, however, both shared half of the goal in the 2018/19 season. Lindahl moved to Wolfsburg for the 2019/20 season , but Ann-Katrin Berger was number 1 .

National teams

In 2003, when she was 16, she took part with the U-19 team in the 2003 U-19 European Women's Football Championship . But it was only used in the last group game, in the 6-0 draw against Germany, when England had already qualified for the semi-finals. In the semifinals, which were lost 2-0 to eventual European champions France, Karen Bardsley was preferred to her again .

She made her first international match on March 11, 2007 against Scotland . She was then nominated for the 2007 World Cup , but not used and did not get beyond the status of the third substitute goalkeeper in the following years. Karen Bardsley, Rachel Brown and, most recently, Siobhan Chamberlain were preferred to her over and over again .

Before the 2009 European Championship, she was one of 17 players who were provided with central contracts by the English association. Nevertheless, she was not nominated for the 2009 European Championships , 2011 World Championships and 2013 European Championships . It was only after Rachel Brown's resignation that a goalkeeper position became available and she was considered for the 2015 World Cup. As in 2007, it was not used there. In the subsequent qualification for the 2017 European Championship , she was used once, in an 8-0 win against Estonia . She was then nominated as the third goalkeeper with eight international matches for the 2017 European Championship . While the other two goalkeepers each played three games at the European Championship, she only sat on the bench.

In the subsequent World Cup qualification , however, she made four appearances in which she remained three times without conceding a goal, but conceded the only goal in qualifying in a 3-1 win against Russia . At the end of February / beginning of March 2019 she was part of the squad that won the SheBelieves Cup for the first time and was used in two games (2: 1 against Brazil and 3: 0 against Japan ). On May 8th she was nominated for the World Cup . At the World Cup, she was used in a group game as well as the semi-finals and third place match and only remained without conceding a goal in the 1-0 win against Argentina . In the end, fourth place jumped out for her team.
