Casa dei Cei (German house of the Ceii family ) (I 6, 15) is the modern name of a residential building in Pompeii .

The house was excavated by Matteo Della Corte in 1913 . In the following period, parts of the house were restored and redesigned. As a result, the painting is still in good condition today.

The house was built at the end of the second century BC. There were at least two renovation phases. The house is a small, simple atrium house. The entrance ( fauces ), which is flanked on one side by a bedroom and on the other by the kitchen of the house, leads directly into the atrium, which is decorated by four columns . In the atrium there is a staircase to an upper floor. At the rear of the atrium there was a tablinum and a triclinium . Behind it you will find another bedroom, two more small rooms and finally the garden of the house. Some rooms in the house show simple mosaics decorated with geometric motifs .

The house is particularly noteworthy for its painting in the third Pompeian style of wall painting . Most of the walls show strict field decorations. The colors red and black dominate. In the garden there are depictions of a Nile landscape , hunting in the desert and another landscape depiction on three walls .

Because of the election inscriptions on the facade of the house, it is assumed that a certain L. Ceius Secundus lived here. This held high political offices in the city. The Ceii family were among the ancient Samnite families of the city.

The house is open for viewing today.
