Castellabate is an Italian commune with 8956 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Salerno in the Campania region . The town is a member of the association I borghi più belli d'Italia (The Most Beautiful Places in Italy).

geography

Castellabate lies on the Tyrrhenian Sea and, together with the district of Licosa, forms the southern tip of the Gulf of Salerno . It is enclosed by the municipalities of Agropoli , Laureana Cilento , Montecorice and Perdifumo . The districts of Santa Maria di Castellabate , San Marco (Castellabate) , Ogliastro Marina , Licosa and Lago are by the sea, Alano and the town center itself are behind the districts. There are also other loose peasant groups, such as Annunziata.

history

The abbot's castle gave the place its name, from il castello dell'Abate became Castellabate. It was built in 1123 by order of the abbot of Cava de`Tirreni, and the city's wealth goes back to the centuries-long social and economic influence of the Benedictine monks. The structure of the historic town center, the connected houses and the narrow streets is not accidental either: it was planned by the monks in the fort and in the Basilica Romanica of Santa Maria de Gulia with its well-preserved bell tower from the 12th century - just like the soon developing trade that was to bring wine, oil and grain to the monks and more distant regions.

economy

tourism

The place is heavily influenced by tourism, especially on the coast. The season is limited to the summer months. It is mainly the domestic tourists who fill the beaches and streets of the place. In addition to hotels and pensions, there are also several campsites for overnight stays. Agrotourism is offered in the hinterland .

Agriculture

Most of the agricultural land is run by smallholders. Due to the climatic conditions, the olive tree is in the foreground. Fig trees are also grown. Occasionally, viticulture is also practiced.

Other economy

One looks in vain for larger industrial companies in Castellabate. There are smaller shipyards in Santa Maria and San Marco . Fishing is still carried out from the port of San Marco.
