Celal Doğan (born August 1, 1943 in Nizip , Gaziantep ) is a Turkish politician and football functionary.

Career as a politician

Doğan went to school in Gaziantep and studied law at the Istanbul University Faculty of Law . Between 1973 and 1977 he worked as a freelance lawyer. From 1977 to 1980 he was a member of the Turkish National Assembly for the CHP , after which he returned to his profession as a lawyer until 1989. In 1989 he was elected Lord Mayor of Gaziantep in the local elections. In 1994 and 1999 he was confirmed in office. He was unable to win the mayoral elections in 2004 .

He was nominated by the HDP as a candidate for the elections to the National Assembly in summer 2015 . In 2019 he ran as a candidate for the Democratic Sol Parti in the local elections in his home district of Gaziantep. With 26.2%, he came second behind Fatma Şahin from the AKP .

Career as a sports official

From 1993 to 2005 Doğan was president of the local football club Gaziantepspor , of which he has been honorary chairman since 2005.

He is also a member of Fenerbahçe Istanbul . Due to his party affiliation with the HDP, an expulsion procedure was applied for against his association membership in 2016.

Private

Celal Doğan is married and has two children.
