The 16 clubs in Tunisia's top soccer division , currently called Ligue Professionelle 1 , play for the Championnat de Tunisie (German: Tunisian Championship) . The league is managed by the Tunisian Football Association . There are a total of 30 game days (home and return games).
history
The beginnings of football in Tunisia were strongly influenced by the French. The first championship tournaments took place with practically no local Tunisian players.
In 1907 the first championship was played in the form of a tournament. Three clubs ( Racing Club de Tunis , Football Club de Bizerte and Sporting de Ferry-Ville ) and two school teams (Vom Lycée Carnot and Collège Sadiki ) took part. Championship tournaments were held regularly from 1910 under the care of the French sports association, the Union des Sociétés Françaises de Sports Athlétiques (USFSA) .
Two years after the founding of the French football association Fédération Française de Football (FTF) , a Tunisian football association, the Ligue de Tunisie de Football Association (LTFA) was created in 1921. This association organized the Tunisian championship from then on, in which more local teams took part. Many of the most popular teams were founded at this time: Espérance Tunis (1919), Club Africain and Sfax Railways Sports (1920), Étoile Sportive du Sahel (1925), Club Athlétique Bizertin and Club Sportif Sfaxien (1928).
With the independence of Tunisia, the current independent Tunisian Football Association (FTF) was founded. One year later (1957) the FTF dissolved the LTFA as the organizer of the Tunisian championship.
