Chen Jining

Chen Jining ( Chinese  陈吉宁 , Pinyin Chén Jíníng ; * 1964 in Lishu County, Jilin Province , People's Republic of China ) is a Chinese environmental scientist and former Environment Minister of the People's Republic of China . He has been the mayor of Beijing City since May 2017 .

Life

Chen studied environmental engineering from 1981 to 1988 at Tsinghua University in Beijing, then until 1989 at Brunel University in London. He obtained his doctorate in environmental systems analysis at Imperial College London in 1993, where he held a postdoc position until 1994 and was then research assistant. In 1998 he was appointed deputy head of the environmental science and engineering department at Tsinghua University, the following year, he was appointed director, and from 2006 to 2007 he was vice president of the university and a member of the CCP's party committee . From 2007 to 2012 he was General Secretary and Executive Vice President of the university. He has also been the dean of the Biosciences Department since 2007 . He became president of Tsinghua University in January 2012 and resigned from office in January 2015 because of his upcoming appointment as Minister of the Environment. He is also a member of the National Environmental Advisory Council and other environmental bodies in China. At the end of February 2015, Chen Jining was appointed to succeed the previous Environment Minister, Zhou Shengxian . In May 2017, he handed over the leadership of the ministry to Li Ganjie . He has been the mayor of Beijing City since May 27, 2017, succeeding Cai Qi .
