Childebrand

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Childebrand († after 751) duc (Duke) of Provence , was a son of Pippin the Middle and probably his concubine (ie, Childebrand had no claim to the father's inheritance). Pippin the Younger was his nephew.

Life and accomplishments

Today it is not yet clear whether Chalpaida , Pippin's second wife, is also the mother of Childebrand alongside Karl Martell . In the Fredegar Chronicle , Childebrand is referred to as the germanus of Karl [that is, brother on his father's side, possibly also on his mother's side (half brother or full brother)] or as avunculus (uncle) of Pippin the Younger. He held a count's office in Burgundy and received property from Karl Martell in the Gau von Belun .

In the battles in Avignon and Narbonne (737), against the invaded Saracens , he served as a general under Charles Martell. 739/740, near Burgundy he served as a general under Pippin the Younger.

Childebrand also oversaw the second sequel to the Fredegar Chronicle until his death (751).

progeny

Childebrand was married; nothing is known about his wife. From this marriage Nibelung I (* 725, † 786), Count of Vexin emerged. From 751 he took over the historiography of the Franconian Empire ( Fredegarian Chronicle ). The Nibelung family in France is also called Nivelon, Névelon, Nébelon.
