geography

The city is located in the extreme southwest of San Bernardino County in California . It is bordered to the northeast by Chino , to the north and west by the cities of Pomona and Diamond Bar in Los Angeles County , to the south by Brea and Yorba Linda in Orange County and to the west by unincorporated area of Riverside County . The northeastern city limit roughly follows the course of California State Route 71 , a connecting road between California State Route 91 in the south and California State Route 60 in the north. The Orange County border is in largely undeveloped hill country, so the two counties are only directly connected to each other via California State Route 142 . The road is long, winding and prone to landslides .

The built-up part of Chino Hills is characterized by residential areas, only at the intersections of main streets are commercial areas, which are mostly dominated by supermarkets and restaurants.

Chino Hills has 74,799 inhabitants (as of the 2010 census ). The city covers an area of approximately 115.9 km², of which the land area makes up the largest part with 115.7 km²; the population density is thus 646.4 inhabitants per square kilometer. The city center is at an altitude of 262 meters.

history

After the Spanish conquerors founded the San Gabriel Arcángel Mission in 1771 , today's Chino Hills was used as pasture for cattle from the mission station, after which cattle from Rancho Santa Ana del Chino and Rancho La Sierra grazed here in Mexican times . Since California was ceded to the United States, the area has become increasingly boggy and annual floods have occurred. Most of the dwellings were demolished. The land was later bought by Richard Gird, founder of the Chino Municipality , which became a town in 1910. Chino Hills has meanwhile developed into a popular destination for tourists from Los Angeles with the Carbon Canyon Mineral Springs resort on what will later be California State Route 142 and the Los Serranos Country Club . The place was also popular with black marketeers during Prohibition because of its seclusion. In the 1960s, the hill country also saw an influx of hippies and artists. From the 1980s, the citizens began to seek incorporation into their community, and in 1991, Chino Hills, with a population of 42,000 at the time, was granted city rights.

development

Until the 1970s, Chino Hills was largely rural. Most of the land was used for equestrian sports, and there were also some dairies. Numerous settlements were built in the following decades. The building boom only subsided in recent years. Most of the city districts were designed in a similar way to villages, so that the shopping centers are strategically located and parks are easily accessible from surrounding houses.

earthquake

On July 29, 2008 at 11:42 a.m. local time, an earthquake with an average magnitude of 5.4 was recorded. The epicenter was about 4 km west-south-west of the city center, but no major damage was reported.

politics

Chino Hills is part of the 29th District in the California Senate , currently represented by Republican Bob Huff . In the California State Assembly , the place is assigned to the 55th District and is thus represented by Republican Curt Hagman . At the federal level, Chino Hills is a member of California's 39th  congressional constituency , which has a Cook Partisan Voting Index of R + 5 and is represented by Republican Ed Royce .
