Christian "Blacky" Schwarzer (born October 23, 1969 in Braunschweig ) is a former German handball player and today's coach.

Career

Christian Schwarzer began playing handball in 1979 at TSG Bergedorf , where he was in goal for the first two and a half years. In 1983 he joined Wandsbek 72 . He then played for VfL Fredenbeck (1987–1991), TV Niederwürzbach (1991–1999) and TBV Lemgo (2001–2007) in the handball Bundesliga with the shirt number 8. In between, the circle runner played for FC Barcelona (1999 –2001) and won the triple including the Champions League there in his first year .

From the 2007/08 season he ran for the Rhein-Neckar Löwen and reached the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup with the club . In the last year of his playing career, on September 18, 2008, after the dismissal of Yuri Schewzow as player-coach, he became his acting successor at the Rhein-Neckar Löwen. Together with Wolfgang Schwenke , who was signed up shortly afterwards , he remained responsible for the team in his dual role until the end of the season.

From July 1, 2009, he worked as youth coordinator for the German Handball Federation and the Saar Handball Association (HVS). In October 2011, the DHB announced that Schwarzer would be the national coach of the juniors with immediate effect and that he would succeed Martin Heuberger . At the end of 2015, Schwarzer left the DHB and has since worked at HVS as a youth coordinator and youth trainer.

National team

Schwarzer played his first international match on November 21, 1989 in Wilhelmshaven against the selection of the GDR. He ended his international career after the final at the 2004 Olympic Games.

For the 2007 World Cup in Germany, he signaled that he was ready to wear the national jersey again before the squad was nominated - if “there was a need”. At first he was also in Heiner Brand's 28-player squad . On December 29, 2006 he was no longer nominated for the squad of 20 World Cup players. He commented on the first two games of the preliminary round as an expert for ZDF . Due to a calf injury from Andrej Klimovets , however, he was re-nominated during the World Cup and had the shirt number 41, which he had "borrowed" from his friend Dirk Nowitzki . On January 22, 2007, Schwarzer celebrated his comeback in the national team in the World Cup preliminary round against Poland. Schwarzer's successor at ZDF was Martin Schwalb .

With the national team he became world champion in this tournament on February 4, 2007. For this triumph he was awarded the silver bay leaf . After he confirmed that he would step down immediately after the game, he said that he thought it would be possible to take part in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and said: "You have to wait and see if I still have the power." June nominated Brand Schwarzer for the Olympics, so that he made his second comeback in the national team.

The travel agent Schwarzer took part in six world and five European championships and four Olympic Games with the German national handball team. In his six World Cup appearances, Schwarzer played a total of 51 games. In a total of 318 international matches (2nd place among all national players) he scored 965 goals. This makes him the record scorer for the German national team.
