history
Total club
On September 10, 1920, VfL Fredenbeck was founded under the name of the men's gymnastics club in Klein Fredenbeck and the surrounding area . Despite its name, the association also opened up to female members. In 1930 more than 50 men and women were active. On February 6, 1946, the general assembly of the association decided to rename it. Since then it has had its current name.
1st men's handball team
In 1981 the 1st men's team was promoted from the regional league to the then newly created 2nd handball Bundesliga / North . With the completion of the Fredenbeck Geestlandhalle at the beginning of the 1980s, the point games no longer had to be played in the district town of Stade . Under the manager Harald Uhding the team was able to firmly establish itself in the league and reached the runner-up in the season 1987/88 behind SG Weiche-Handewitt . In relegation games against the runner-up of the handball Bundesliga / South, TuS Schutterwald , VfL Fredenbeck was promoted to the 1st handball division . Zbigniew Tłuczyński , the club's top player, was the top scorer in the first division in 1989 . Until the 1993/94 season , the team was able to hold the class and occupied mostly midfield positions in the six years of membership in the first division. The relegation was followed by two seasons in the 2nd handball Bundesliga / North before being promoted again in the 1995/96 season . As early as 1995, the team made it to the DHB Cup to take part in the Final Four tournament in Hamburg . There, however, she lost in the semifinals against HSV Düsseldorf . In the 1st handball league, VfL Fredenbeck was only able to hold out for one season after the second promotion. Since the direct relegation, VfL Fredenbeck has played with varying degrees of success in the 2nd Handball Bundesliga / North. In the 2004/05 season , financial difficulties of the sponsoring company of Handball Marketing GmbH at that time, which had already been indicated in the previous season, came to light. The game operations for the then current season and the license for the 2005/06 season were not secured due to the insolvency of Handball-Marketing GmbH . There was a break between the manager Gunnar Schmidt and the management of the entire club and a new sponsoring company, VfL Fredenbeck Handball GmbH & Co. KG , was founded. Although the game could continue until the end of the season, the weakened team failed because of relegation and was the third from last club in the league to be relegated. However, since the DHB did not issue a license to six other clubs for the following season, VfL Fredenbeck's continued membership in the second-highest German league was secured.
They wanted to go into the 2005/06 season without financial risks. As a result, VfL started the series with a mini squad. Even before the start of the second half of the season, it became apparent that relegation would not be possible. Since the spectators stayed away with the sporting failure, there was no money for new signings. At the end of the season, VfL was relegated to the regional league as penultimate. After 25 years in the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga, Lower Saxony started a rebuilding there.
In the 2009/10 season, the club failed as a runner-up in the Regionalliga / Nord just to rise again. According to the new division of the 3rd leagues, VfL played until 2014 in the new 3rd League / North against relegation. A year later, the team finished sixth. Then Fredenbeck was assigned to the west season, which surprisingly finished as runner-up. Lower Saxony decided not to be promoted to the 2nd division because they did not have enough financial means to play in the 2nd division. Since the 2016/17 season, VfL Fredenbeck has been playing in the north season again.
