Ricci grew up as the youngest of four children. After moving to the East Coast with her family, she went to school in New Jersey , where she was discovered by a film critic rather by accident at a Christmas performance by the theater company . A year later followed a small role in The Hard Way . With the role of the mysterious Wednesday Addams in Addams Family and their successor The Addams Family in Crazy Tradition (1993), she achieved her breakthrough as a child star. She received a lot of praise and recognition for these achievements. After the following film Now and Then - Then and Now , she was at a turning point in her career, the step from child star to serious actress.

She subsequently appeared in independent films when Taiwanese director Ang Lee cast her in 1997 for his social drama The Ice Storm . With the embodiment of the precocious 14-year-old Wendy Hood , Ricci was able to convince many critics of her acting maturity and thus to build on her successful career again.

For her role in The Opposite of Sex , she was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award and a Golden Globe in 1999. Tim Burton's gritty film Sleepy Hollow then marked her return from independent filmmaking to Hollywood film. For her role in this film, she was nominated for the Young Artist Award in 2000 and won the Saturn Award .
