Black Snake Moan is an American drama directed by Craig Brewer in 2006 . The film title goes back to the song of the same name by the blues musician Blind Lemon Jefferson .

action

Lazarus is a farmer and blues musician from the southern United States. He is a strict believer, his wife left him for his brother. The young Rae leads a revealing life and is nymphomaniac.

Ronnie, Rae's friend, becomes a soldier, goes to Iraq with the army and has to leave the city. In his absence, Rae is found naked and drunk by Ronnie's friend Gill after a night of partying with alcohol and other drugs . He beats her up and throws her seriously injured out of his car. Lazarus finds her unconscious on the street and takes her to his house. He takes care of them, then he keeps them captive in chains in order to lead them back on the "right path". Rae offers him sex, which Lazarus refuses, instead he wants to "save her soul". Little by little they both open up and trust each other with their fates. Rae had been molested by men as a child, and Lazarus had always wanted a child with his ex-wife. Once she was pregnant but had the child aborted without Lazarus' consent.

After a short time, Ronnie is discharged from the army due to anxiety, returns and learns from Gill that Rae has had several husbands during his absence. Ronnie finds Rae with Lazarus and wants to shoot him because he assumes that Lazarus is one of the many men of Rae. However, Lazarus and Rae tell him the truth. Ronnie and Rae get married and move away to start a new life in another city.

Reviews

Ruthe Stein wrote in the San Francisco Chronicle of March 2, 2007 that the story told was untypical of the films produced in Hollywood. Samuel L. Jackson and Christina Ricci would be remembered at the next Oscar ceremony (“Jackson and Ricci would be remembered come Oscar time”).

Peter Travers scoffed in Rolling Stone magazine on February 20, 2007, saying the film needed a ventilator. Neither Christina Ricci's body nor the music played by Samuel L. Jackson can save the film.

Daniel Kothenschulte judged in his review for the Frankfurter Rundschau : “Even if everything else about the film“ Blake Snake Moan ”will one day be forgotten - and there is a lot to suggest that this day will come very soon - to the half-naked Christina Ricci one will always remember ”.

Thorsten Funke from Critic.de wrote: “The shocking thing about Black Snake Moan is not so much the bondage fantasy, not even Christina Ricci's revealing demeanor. What is more shocking is that the film uses its exploitation elements to create a crude spiritual message. "

The lexicon of international films judged: "The immature film about two outsiders in the American South has an absurd initial situation and an unbelievable happy ending, but two outstanding actors who are nevertheless unable to save the author's film, which is largely staged as a chamber play."

Justin Timberlake was nominated for a 2007 Teen Choice Award for his role as Ronnie .
