Christoph Gerber (born May 15, 1942 in Basel ) is a Swiss physicist .

He is currently "Director of Scientific Communication" at the Physics Department at the University of Basel . His work contributed to the invention of the atomic force microscope and the scanning tunneling microscope . From 1966 to 2004 he worked at the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory . His current research interests are biochemical cantilever - sensors and various nanotechnology issues.

Gerber has written numerous scientific publications. He has been granted patents in the fields of low temperature physics as well as scanning tunneling and atomic force microscopy. He has received an honorary doctorate from the University of Basel and honorary professorships at the University of St. Andrews (Scotland) and from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 1999 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society . For 2016 he was awarded one of the three Kavli prizes together with Calvin Quate and Gerd Binnig .
