Christoph K. Neumann

Christoph K. Neumann (born April 2, 1962 in Braunschweig ) is a German orientalist with a focus on Turkish studies .

Life

After graduating from the Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Braunschweig in 1979 , he studied Ottoman studies , Turkish studies , German studies and political science at the University of Munich (MA 1987) and the Ege Üniversitesi in Izmir . In 1992 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD. In 1993 he received the advancement award of the Southeast Europe Society Munich. In 2006 he qualified as a professor at the University of Munich in Modern and Contemporary History.

Scientific positions led him to the Charles University in Prague , the Orient Institute in Istanbul and the Boğaziçi Üniversitesi in Istanbul . From 1998 to 2002 he was assistant professor at İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi and from 2002 to 2006 at İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi . In 2006 he became Associate Professor at İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi and in 2008 Professor of Turkish Studies at the Institute for the Near and Middle East at the University of Munich.

He researches the history and culture of Turkey and the Ottoman Empire . Neumann is the author, editor and translator of several books on the subject. He has received several grants, including from the German National Academic Foundation and the German Research Foundation . Neumann advised Kindler's Neues Literatur Lexikon in Turkish literature and worked for the Turkologische Anzeiger from 1984 to 1993 . He was also on the advisory and editorial board of scientific journals. Neumann is also the co-author of numerous travel guides on Turkey and translator of Orhan Pamuk's novel Snow .
