Christoph Röhl

Christoph Röhl (* 1967 in Brighton ) is a British-German film director.

Life

Christoph Röhl was born in 1967 as the son of the historian John CG Röhl and the German teacher Rosemarie Röhl, b. von Berg was born and raised bilingual in East Sussex . After studying history and German at the University of Manchester , he went to Germany and worked as an English tutor at the Odenwald School from 1989 to 1991 . In the 1990s he studied directing and screenwriting at the German Film and Television Academy in Berlin .

Röhl already made several short films at the film school , which have received several awards at international film festivals. His first short film In Your Shoes (1995) won the German Short Film Award , among others. He then shot the short film Fivefortyfive for the BBC and in 2000 Butterfly World for Film4. During his studies he also worked as a director for television, for example on two episodes of the children's series The Rights of the Children on ZDF. In England, Röhl realized Close & True in 2000 with Robson Green in the lead role. In 2002 he shot episodes of the ITV series Night and Day .

In 2003, Röhl and others founded the Met Film School in Ealing Studios , London, where he was headmaster between 2003 and 2007. In this role, he designed the entire course. In 2008 he made his first feature film, A Part of Me , the screenplay of which he wrote with author Philippe Longchamp. The film had its international premiere at the International Film Festival Shanghai and was released in German cinemas in October 2009.

In 2010 he shot And We Are Not the Only One, a documentary about the abuse cases at the Odenwald School. The film was nominated for the German Television Prize 2011 and won the Robert Geisendörfer Prize in 2012 . In 2013 he took up the topic again and shot the film The Chosen with Ulrich Tukur in the role of the headmaster on the original location for ARD . In 2018 he directed the historical docu-drama Kaisersturz based on a screenplay by Dirk Kämper and the historian Lothar Machtan for ZDF . The film tells the struggle for power in the last days of the empire. His documentary Defender of the Faith opened in cinemas at the end of October 2019. The film takes a critical look at Joseph Ratzinger's work on the Catholic Church over the past 60 years and sparked a major media debate.

In 2014 Queen Silvia of Sweden honored Christoph Röhl with the World Childhood Foundation Award 2014 for outstanding achievements in the fight against sexual abuse in Germany.
