Christopher John "Chris" Cassidy (born January 4, 1970 in Salem , Massachusetts ) is an American astronaut from NASA .

Military career

Cassidy was a member of the United States Navy and its special unit United States Navy SEALs for ten years . Among other things, he was trained for operations with the small submarine SEAL Delivery Vehicle and spent over 200 hours under water with it. In autumn 2001 he was ordered to go to Afghanistan. For his combat missions there he received various awards, including twice the Bronze Star Medal with the addition of V for bravery. He achieved the rank of commander .

Spaceman activity

On May 6, 2004, Cassidy was selected by the NASA space agency and trained as a mission specialist.

On February 11, 2008 he was nominated for the crew of the STS-127 mission . During this flight, Japanese modules were brought to the International Space Station ISS . The launch took place on July 15, 2009, the landing on July 31, 2009. Cassidy carried out three space exits with a total duration of over 18 hours.

Cassidy was the flight engineer on ISS expeditions 35 and 36 . The launch with the Soyuz TMA-08M spacecraft took place on March 28, 2013. On May 11, Cassidy and Thomas Marshburn exchanged a pump control box on the P6 solar module during an unscheduled EVA . He conducted two further EVAs on July 9th and July 13th together with Luca Parmitano . During the second, a large amount of water accumulated in Parmitano's helmet, so that the work was ended prematurely. In the airlock, Parmitano could neither see nor hear because water seeped into his eyes, ears and nose, so that he was completely dependent on Cassidy. The return to earth took place on September 11, 2013.

On July 9, 2015, Cassidy became Chief of the Astronaut Office at NASA. On June 2, 2017, Cassidy passed the office to Patrick Forrester and went back to normal astronaut flight status.

On April 9, 2020, he started the Soyuz MS-16 mission to the International Space Station , where he took command of ISS Expedition 63 .
