Chubby checker
Chubby Checker (born October 3, 1941 in Spring Gulley , South Carolina ; real life Ernest Evans ) is an American rock and roll singer who became world famous for the hit The Twist .
Career
Chubby Checker grew up in Philadelphia . His parents were Raymond and Eartle Evans. He formed his first music band at the age of eleven; he had learned to sell poultry meat. He was discovered at the weekly market when he was selling chickens while singing his songs. In 1959 he signed a record deal with Cameo Parkway and was given the stage name "Chubby Checker" (chubby = plump, plump). His first single, The Class, was a minor hit. He later covered the B-side of a single from Hank Ballard & the Midnighters called The Twist . The song became a big hit: in 1960 it rose to number oneand stayed in the charts for three months; the accompanying dance became popular as well. The following year, Checker continued his hit streak with Pony Time (written by Don Covay and John Berry) and Let's Twist Again . Slow twistin ' , limbo rock and Popeye the Hitchhiker also made him one of the most successful artists in 1962.
By 1966 he had placed himself in the charts with over 30 titles, then his success subsided: with the beginning of the Beatles era, his happy dance music was no longer in demand. Checker tried to adapt to the times and now also produced records with folky and psychedelic sounds. There was very little consumer interest in this.
After engagements in smaller nightclubs and oldie shows, he was re-signed by the MCA in 1982 and brought out the moderately successful LP The Change Has Come .
His hit The Twist achieved international success again in 1988 in a revision by the Fat Boys ; Chubby himself toured pubs and gyms across the United States.
In the late 1990s, Checker returned to his original profession and started his own company selling snack products, candy bars, popcorn, steaks and hot dogs.
In 2007 he was back in the charts after a long time when he reached number one on the dance sales charts in the USA with Knock Down the Walls .
Checker is married to Catharina Lodders from the Netherlands , who became Miss World in 1962. The couple have three children and live in Philadelphia.
On February 12, 2013 Chubby Checker sued the US company Hewlett-Packard for damages in the amount of 500 million US dollars. The reason for the lawsuit is a (now withdrawn from circulation) (fun) app from the Palm OS platform with the same name 'Chubby Checker'; it allows to deduce the penis length of a man based on the size of his shoes, which Chubby Checker saw as a violation of his naming rights and his honor.
