With newsreel excerpts, film recordings from British and captured film recordings from German authorities, the short film tells the story of the British defensive battle against the German Wehrmacht at the beginning of the Second World War. It addresses the German air raids on British cities in 1940, the submarine war against ships heading for England and England's preparations for defense against a German invasion.

In 1942 the film was awarded an Oscar in the category Best Documentary Short Film .

The film was produced by the National Film Board of Canada . The Canadian division of Columbia Pictures took over the distribution in Canada . United Artists was the distributor in the USA .

The film's spokesperson was the Canadian actor Lorne Greene , known as Ben Cartwright from the TV series Bonanza . At the time of production, Greene was still a radio announcer in Canada for Radio CBC and was considered the most popular newscaster in the country.

The film was responsible for two premieres at the 1942 Academy Awards. For the first time, an Oscar was awarded specifically for documentary films. The film was also the first Canadian production to ever win an Oscar.
