The Cirque de Cilaos in the homonymous municipality of Cilaos in the French overseas department of Réunion is the southernmost caldera des Piton des Neiges . It extends in north-south direction and in east-west direction over about seven kilometers. The Cirque de Cilaos is the most densely populated basin on the island of Reunion Island . In 1927 the local residents decided to build a road to Saint-Louis . At that time it was a gigantic challenge to cut the road out of the rock. The work lasted eight years and was carried out by workers from Madagascar without the use of explosives . Cilaos is known for the locally grown lentils , which are recognized as a national dish across the island .

Since August 2010, in addition to the Cirque de Cilaos, the Cirque de Salazie , the Cirque de Mafate and the towering volcano Piton des Neiges, all of which are located in the Réunion National Park , under the title Pitons, cirques et remparts de l'île de La Réunion (German: summit, basin and steep slopes of the island of Réunion) a UNESCO World Heritage Site .
