Claire Wilbur

Claire Wilbur (born June 8, 1933 in Plainfield , Connecticut as Catt June "Claire" Janetatos ; † May 20, 2004 in New York City ) was an American actress and film producer who won an Oscar in 1976 together with Robin Lehman and 1977 was nominated for an Oscar. She gained particular fame for her role as the seductive Elvira Jackson in the erotic film Score .

biography

Claire Wilbur was a member of Score when the play ran from October 28 to November 15, 1970 at the Martinique Theater in New York on Broadway . She was the only one in the ensemble to make it in Radley Metzger's 1973 film. According to Score , Wilbur made the 1974 sex exploitation film Teenage Hitchhikers .

Margaret Caldwell, a long-time close friend of Wilbur's, reported at the time that Wilbur only accepted the role of Elvira in the film Score in order to earn enough money to produce a documentary with her friend Robin Lehman, for which he wrote the script was written and already otherwise active. Together with Lehman, she then also produced his short documentaries The End of the Game (1975) and Nightlife (1976). For The End of the Game , both were awarded an Oscar in the category “Best Documentary Short Film” and they were nominated for the trophy for Nightlife in the category “Best Short Film” .

Since Wilbur's love was for animals, she later became involved in animal welfare and wrote two books that dealt with the Maneki-neko , a Japanese porcelain cat, also known as the "waving cat" or "waving cat". The books were not published, however.

Claire Wilbur was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2003 and died in May 2004 in her Manhattan apartment. She was 70 years old. She is buried in Hart Island Potter's Field in New York.
