Clarence von Rosen

Clarence von Rosen (born May 12, 1867 in Stockholm , † August 19, 1955 in Djursholm ) was a Swedish nobleman , sports official and member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). He was one of the pioneers of Swedish sport. The assessment of his personality was revised by the posthumous exposure of his commitment to National Socialism .

Life

Von Rosen was a stable master at the Swedish court. The son of a Swedish nobleman and an American industrialist daughter came to sport through Victor Balck . Trained at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna , he initially devoted himself to equestrian sport. As a functionary and patron, he was also involved in football , bandy , tennis and motor sports , drawing on the assets managed by his grandmother, Clara Jessup Moore, who lives in the United States, for funding .

In 1900 von Rosen became the second Swedish member of the IOC alongside Balck. While the Swedish National Olympic Committee was formed in 1905 , Swedish influence in the IOC grew as a result. In 1907, von Rosens gave his first inspiration for the introduction of equestrian sport at the Olympic Games. After this was unsuccessful, a second application was successful two years later. In the same year the decision was made to award the games of the 5th Olympiad in Stockholm in 1912 . After the death of the organizing committee member Bernhard Burman shortly before the games, the previous deputy Astley Levin moved up and von Rosen took over his role as a non-voting deputy. At the Olympic Winter and Summer Games in 1932 and the Olympic Summer Games in 1936 , he headed the Swedish squad. In the run-up to the 1936 Olympic Games, he was considered an important friend of National Socialist Germany, which, thanks to the apparent neutrality of Sweden, knew how to prevent a possible Olympic boycott by Scandinavia. Until 1948 he was a member of the IOC.

As early as 1899, von Rosen donated the Rosenska Cups . When the Swedish Football Association was founded in 1904, he became its first chairman and subsequently incorporated his competition into the Svenska Mästerskapet . The winner of the championship title then received the challenge cup donated by him . In 1903 von Rosen also took over the chairmanship of the newly created Kungliga Automobile Club , which he held until 1933.

In 2000 von Rosen's involvement in the Swedish National Socialism became public. The brother Eric von Rosen , by marriage to Hermann Göring's first wife Carin , had been involved in National Socialism as the founder of the National Socialistiska blocket . But he was also committed himself. After the Olympic Games in 1936, he attended the Nazi Party Congress in Nuremberg. In 1940 he took part in a conference of the right-wing Sveriges nationella förbund to unite national, Nazi and fascist movements.

After uncovering his involvement in National Socialism, the Swedish Football Association stopped awarding the Von Rosens Cup for the national champions and awarded the Lennart Johansson Cup a new award.

His estate is stored in the Stockholm Reich Archives , but is not accessible for scientific research due to a blocking notice from his descendants.
