Claude Longchamp (born March 14, 1957 in Freiburg im Üechtland ) is a Swiss historian and political scientist .

Career

Longchamp concentrated on the analysis of direct democracy , above all on the behavior of citizens when making decisions about the matter, on the social and political influences on opinion-forming and on mass media communication in politics. To this end, he has developed the “disposition approach”, which analyzes the interplay between predispositions and information when making material decisions.

In addition to electoral and voting research, Longchamp's fields of activity include Swiss politics, European politics, especially health policy, financial, environmental and technology policy, political culture, anti-Semitism , public opinion, political communication and opinion polls and lobbyism .

Claude Longchamp studied history from 1977 , combined with sociology and political science , and graduated as lic. phil. from. From 1983 he worked at what was then the Research Center for Swiss Politics, today's Institute for Political Science at the University of Bern , and since 1987 Longchamp has been an election and voting analyst for the media of SRG SSR idée suisse . Since 1992 he and his team at gfs.bern have also been responsible for the vote extrapolation and, since 1998, for the election and voting-related surveys for the companies of the SRG SSR idée suisse. Since 1992 he has been the editor of the VOX analyzes of federal polls. He heads the Worry Barometer, the Health Monitor, the Finance Monitor and is currently preparing the racism monitoring in Switzerland.

Longchamp taught political science at the University of Bern until 1992 , since then he has also been a lecturer at other universities ( University of Freiburg , University of Zurich , University of St. Gallen ) and universities of applied sciences (in Winterthur , Zurich and Lausanne ). Since 2008 he has been teaching "Political Research in Practice" at the University of St. Gallen as part of the International Affairs course . He also teaches election research at the Universities of Zurich (since 2009) and Bern (since 2011).

From 1993 to 2003 Longchamp was Chairman of the Management Board and member of the Board of Directors of the GfS Research Institute, Politics and State division. In 2004 he founded the research institute gfs.bern and took over the chairmanship of the administrative board. Until the end of April 2017 he was also the managing director of gfs.bern ; Successors as co-managing directors were Lukas Golder and Urs Bieri, to whom he gradually sold gfs.bern . Longchamp will remain Chairman of the Board of Directors until 2019. Lukas Golder took over from him in September 2017 when explaining the voting results on Swiss television . In response to criticism of the research institute gfs.bern and its director, the Independent Complaints Authority for Radio and Television (UBI) confirmed in 2008 that it was one of the most recognized institutions for applied political research in Switzerland.

Claude Longchamp conducts historical-political-cultural city tours, primarily for international delegations, politicians, administrative members and media professionals. Longchamp is a member of the Social Democratic Party (SP), but has not been politically active since 1993. He is involved in the foundation of the Bern association to upgrade the Bern area to become the leading political center in Switzerland.
