Sir Edward Montague Compton Mackenzie (born January 17, 1883 in West Hartlepool , † November 30, 1972 in Edinburgh ) was a Scottish writer and nationalist .

Life

Mackenzie was born into a family in which the theater played an important role. Fay Compton , his sister, has appeared in many of James M. Barrie's plays , including Peter Pan . His father Edward Compton was also an actor. Although Mackenzie was born in England, his life was shaped by a deep bond with Scottish Gaelic culture.

During the First World War , Mackenzie served in British Intelligence on the eastern Mediterranean . He later published four books about the experience he gained during this time. Between 1920 and 1923 he was tenant of the channel island Herm .

Mackenzie was married three times and worked not only as a writer but also as an actor and broadcaster. He was also politically active and is one of the founders of the Scottish National Party .

Mackenzie built a property on the Scottish island of Barra in the 1930s . During the time he lived there, in addition to inspiration, he also made many friends whom he described as the aristocrats of democracy . These included John MacPherson, known as The Coddy .

On July 8, 1952, he was beaten to the Knight Bachelor and since then has had the addition of "Sir".

After his death in 1972, Sir Compton Mackenzie was buried on Barra.

Mackenzie wrote several novels, including The Passionate Elopement , Carnival , Sinister Street and the autobiography My Life and Times , which was written between 1963 and 1971.

The comical novels Whiskey Galore! and Monarch of the Glen , which provided the material for a successful film and television series, are probably his best-known works. In total, Compton Mackenzie brought out almost a hundred books, including ten autobiographical volumes. The Four Winds Of Love is considered his masterpiece.

In 1923 he co-founded The Grammophone with Christopher Stone , a still influential British magazine reporting on classical music.
