Conrad Salinger

Conrad Salinger (born August 30, 1901 in Brookline , Massachusetts , † June 17, 1962 in Pacific Palisades , California ) was an American composer , arranger and conductor . He created some well-known musical works for the cinema of the 1950s, including compositions for films such as Mississippi Melody , You and No Other , Back then in Paris or Life is a Lie .

life and career

Conrad Salinger was born in Brookline, Massachusetts in 1901. As a musical graduate from Harvard in 1923, Salinger soon went to Europe and studied at the Paris Conservatory under André Gedalge . Not until 1929 did he return from France to the USA, where he accepted a job as an arranger for Harms Music Publishing in New York. As an arranger, he quickly familiarized himself with all common musical styles, which made him stand out in his work as a versatile arranger on Broadway from 1932 to 1937. In 1937 he went to Hollywood . In 1938 MGM took him under a long-term contract as an orchestra player and composer. At the beginning of his career, Salinger often worked in the background without musical credits or a mention in the film. His field of activity was often defined in collaboration with Roger Edens and under the auspices of Arthur Freed's production unit . It wasn't until the late 1940s that he stepped into the limelight with his own compositions. From 1948 on Salinger wrote the music for films like Summer Holiday , Lawyer of Crime , Stronger Than Chains , You and No Other , The Scarlet Rock or Gaby . Towards the end of the 1950s, Salinger composed mainly the music for television films and television series. In 1951, together with Adolph Deutsch , he was honored with an Oscar nomination for his work on the musical Mississippi-Melodie by director George Sidney .

In his career, Salinger composed the music for around a dozen feature films, orchestrated the music for 140 films, and also contributed additional music to the film in over 30 productions without being mentioned in the credits. Together with the composer and arranger Johnny Green , he was one of the most prominent representatives of his field in Hollywood in the 1940s and 1950s. Salinger died on June 17, 1962 of a heart attack in his sleep. He was 60 years old.
