The first documented ascent was by Francesco De Marchi , who at the age of 69, with a guide and four other companions, climbed the Corno Grande on August 19, 1573 from Assegni on the west side of the massif in just over five hours. The first ascent was not recognized until 1938 after his notes on the ascent of Corno Grande were published in the journal of the Italian Geographical Society . Until then, the naturalist Orazio Delfico from Teramo was considered to be the first to climb the Gran Sasso, although he climbed the 9 m lower eastern summit on July 30, 1794. The brothers Corradino and Gaudenzio Sella made the first winter ascent on January 9, 1880. The first ascent on skis was on March 26, 1923 by Aldo Bonacossa.
