A few weeks before signing the contract, Săpunaru lost with Progresul against Rapid in the Romanian Cup final.
In summer 2008 he moved to FC Porto . There he signed a five-year contract, but was loaned back to Rapid Bucharest in the second half of the 2009/10 season. After returning to Porto, he won the 2011 championship , the Portuguese Cup and the Europa League .
On August 31, 2012 it was announced that Săpunaru was moving to Real Zaragoza . With his new club, he had to relegate at the end of the 2012/13 season . He then moved to FC Elche . He had been without a club for half a year since the summer of 2014 before Rapid Bucharest brought him back to Romania. In the 2015/16 season he then played for Pandurii Târgu Jiu . In summer 2016 he joined Astra Giurgiu .
In the summer of 2017 he moved to Turkey for the first division club Kayserispor . After two years as a regular player, Săpunaru moved together with his teammate Tiago Lopes to the Aegean club Denizlispor , which he left again during the winter break and returned to Kayserispor.
