Cristina Garmendia

Cristina Garmendia Mendizábal (born February 21, 1962 in San Sebastián ) is a Spanish biologist, manager and politician. From 2008 to December 2011 she was the Spanish Minister for Science and Innovation.

In 1989 she received her PhD in microbiology from the University of Madrid . In 1992, she obtained a master's degree in business administration from the University of Navarra . 2001–2008 she was chairwoman of the cross-company research institute Genetrix and 2005–2008 of the biotechnology industry association ASEBIO. At Genetrix she worked on therapies based on adult stem cells . In 2008 she became the Spanish Minister for Science and Innovation. Until 2019 she was chairwoman of the supervisory board of Sygnis AG.
