Cyclotella is a genus of diatoms (Bacillariophyta) with around 100 species that occur in fresh and salt water .

features

Cyclotella is a centric diatom. The individual cells have the typical diatom shell consisting of two counters. This is rectangular in the side view and circular in the shell view. The cells are immobile. They have a central cell nucleus and a number of marginal, lenticular plastids that are colored golden brown by fucoxanthin .

The size of the cells is 4 to 40 micrometers. The cell wall is provided with radial ornaments in the shell view. Long, fine bristles made of chitin sit on the edges of the bowl , they serve as floating extensions. Sometimes some cells are connected by jelly.

Asexual reproduction occurs through the typical division of diatoms into two parts, which leads to the reduction of the cells. Sexual reproduction occurs through the oogamy characteristic of centric diatoms . Following this and in the course of auxospore formation, the cells enlarge.

Occurrence

Cyclotella occurs in stagnant water. The nutritional content does not matter. They live both floating ( plankton ) and on the ground ( benthos ).
