DAZN ( [dəˈzoːn] ) is a paid streaming service that has been in operation since August 2016 and offers sports broadcasts over the Internet . DAZN has been available in Germany , Austria , Switzerland and Japan since August 2016 , in Canada since 2017 , in Italy and the USA since 2018 and in Spain and Brazil since 2019 .

DAZN is spoken in English as Da Zone , derived from The Zone (German: "The Zone"), which describes the state of being completely focused on a game.

DAZN was originally founded in 2016 by Access Industries . In 2018, former ESPN CEO John Skipper was appointed CEO of DAZN. In April 2019, the Perform Group sold its sports data branch and renamed itself the DAZN Group in the course of this restructuring.

As of December 2018, DAZN was valued at around £ 3 billion and it is considered one of the UK's few tech unicorns . In September 2019, DAZN was ranked in a ranking published by SensorTower as the world's top-selling mobile app in the sports sector (1st half of 2019).

profile

In 2016, DAZN acquired broadcasting rights to the British Premier League for Germany, Austria and Switzerland from the 2016/2017 season through the Perform Group , which Sky Germany had previously owned. Previously, the exclusive rights package of the Japanese J-League had been acquired for around 2 billion US dollars . According to its own information, DAZN wants to act aggressively on the sports rights market for the German-speaking area and is financed on a basis of ten to twelve years. The acquisition of a large part of the UEFA Champions League rights and the entire UEFA Europa League in German-speaking countries for the three seasons from 2018/19 to 2020/21 attracted attention. In summer 2019 it was also announced that DAZN had taken over the previous rights package for the German Bundesliga as part of a cooperation with the sports broadcaster Eurosport. Starting with the 2019/20 season, DAZN will therefore be showing exclusive live games from the German Bundesliga for the first time in Germany.

DAZN is occasionally referred to in the media as the Netflix of sport . DAZN manager James Rushton said of this comparison that the approach "is much more complex", as you show hundreds of live broadcasts per week and not just archive content. Similarly, the project should be financed through “the masses”. Around 8,000 live programs were broadcast in 2017. The money for the sports broadcasting rights comes from the majority owner of the DAZN Group, Access Industries, which belongs to the multibillionaire Leonard Blavatnik , who became wealthy with stakes in oil and aluminum companies and has capital of around 20 billion US dollars, according to Forbes .

In August 2016 , quotemeter.de assumed an editorial, commentator and on-air promotion team with over 100 employees at the German production site in Ismaning near Munich .

Access and transmission routes

Access to DAZN is only possible with a paid subscription. According to DAZN, it offers resolutions of 720p or 1080p ( Full HD ) if there is an Internet connection of at least 6 Mbit / s. Content is transmitted via Internet streaming to stationary and mobile devices such as desktop and laptop computers, streaming boxes , smart TVs , smartphones , tablets or game consoles ( over-the-top content ). Due to a cooperation between Sky and DAZN, it is also possible to stream DAZN via a Sky Q receiver. In a test area in Norderstedt , DAZN could also be received via the cable provider wilhelm.tel for a while.

Sports broadcast rights in German-speaking countries

Soccer

Since the 2019/20 season, DAZN has broadcast the 30 Friday games and the 5 Sunday games at 1.30 p.m. as well as the Monday games of the Bundesliga live . In addition, there are 8 relegation games and the DFL Supercup . For the period 2016/17 to 2020/21, DAZN shows summaries of the games in the German Bundesliga, which for the 2016/17 season was based on a partnership with the Axel Springer Group , which held the rights to the online summaries . As of the 2017/18 season , DAZN is the rights holder of the so-called highlight reports (formerly Bild.de ).

In the field of football, DAZN also broadcasts games from the Sky Bet Championship (England), the Scottish Premiership (Scotland), the Superligaen (Denmark), Serie A (Italy), Ligue 1 (France), LaLiga Santander (Spain), the Eredivisie (Netherlands), Primeira Liga (Portugal), Allsvenskan (Sweden), Jupiler Pro League (Belgium), Prva HNL (Croatia), J1 League (Japan), Chinese Super League (China), A -League (Australia), the Major League Soccer (USA), the Copa Libertadores (South America), the Copa Sudamericana (South America) as well as friendly matches and national cup competitions.

From 2018 to 2021, DAZN will be showing matches of the UEFA Champions League as a sub-license in Germany and Austria . The main licensee is Sky . The division of the games is based on a key agreed between the two players. According to a report by the kicker, the number of transmissions also depends on the number of German participants, especially in the knockout rounds. The basic formulas of the agreements reached so far resulted in the first legs running from the round of 16 at DAZN in the decisive phase of the competition; In the return matches, Sky has the first right to vote, and should focus primarily on the Bundesliga participants. Sky shows all conferences, but is allowed to broadcast a maximum of 30 minutes per game. Sky broadcasts a total of 34 games live, DAZN 110 games, but no conference. There is speculation in the industry that both companies have spent 600 million euros for the three seasons up to 2020/21. On December 12, 2019, media reports came up that DAZN had secured even more extensive rights for three seasons from the 2021/22 season. According to reports, DAZN is sharing the games with Amazon . Amazon should be able to choose a Tuesday game. The remaining games will be broadcast by DAZN. Sky should therefore no longer hold any rights.

Starting with the 2018/19 season, DAZN has the rights to broadcast all UEFA Europa League matches in Germany and Austria for three years . On January 26, 2020 it was announced that all rights to the UEFA Europa League would go to Mediengruppe RTL for three years from the 2021/2022 season . DAZN therefore no longer has any transmission rights.

In September 2018, DAZN acquired the rights to the first two seasons of the UEFA Nations League for Germany, Austria and Switzerland. All games are shown exclusively, with the exception of the games of the respective national teams.

With a DAZN subscription, reception is also possible abroad. So you can log in and view the DAZN program of your home country anywhere in the EU.

Sky sports bars have the option of receiving on two channels (DAZN 1 Bar HD & DAZN 2 Bar HD) as part of a subscription via Astra satellite or cable TV. Sky private subscribers do not currently have this option.

From the 2019/2020 season, DAZN has secured the rights of the 1st Bundesliga from Eurosport until 2021.

The broadcast of the Champions League from 2021 to 2024 was acquired in August 2020. This means that 121 out of 137 are broadcast exclusively per season.

Other sports

Beyond football are in the DAZN range

In April 2017 it was announced that DAZN had also secured the rights to Major League Baseball (North America) for four years. On June 9, 2017 it was announced that DAZN will broadcast all important international hockey events in Germany, Austria and Switzerland until 2018 .
