Since five Bloods is a war drama by Spike Lee that in the program of the June 12, 2020 Netflix was taken.

action

The four African Americans Paul, Melvin, Otis and Eddie meet again in Ho Chi Minh City. The war veterans have returned to Vietnam after nearly four decades to search for the remains of their then-fallen leader Norman and bring them back to the United States. His temporary grave could not be found for many years, but after a mudslide, his traces can be seen again on current satellite photos. There they had also buried a large amount of gold bars that they were able to recover from a crashed plane. The CIA wanted to use the gold to buy information about the Viet Cong from Lahu allies. The "Bloods" have something else in mind with the gold. They vowed to return to Vietnam one day and distribute the gold to the people.

Paul has changed the most since then. He is constantly irritable, has PTSD that has never been treated, and, to the surprise of others, is a supporter of the President. He is not in good shape financially either. Eddie, conversely, is the owner of a chain of dealerships. Despite all the differences, the four have one thing in common. They adored their fallen squad leader Stormin 'Norman. It was also he who stopped them from using their machine guns at their white comrades when they heard about the murder of Martin Luther King through a propaganda broadcast by the Viet Cong . They didn't want to risk their lives for a country killing their black heroes, but Norman made it clear to them that there is another way to change the US. When Otis meets the former prostitute and current businesswoman Tien, with whom he was liaisoned at the time, he learns about his daughter and how she was discriminated against throughout her life because she was not just the illegitimate child of a US soldier, but also because of their inherited skin color.

After visiting a club together, they set off across rice fields towards the jungle. You have hired the Vietnamese Vinh Tran as your guide. They are supported by the wealthy French woman Hedy, who heads an organization for the removal of landmines called LAMB, her two colleagues and the French businessman Desroche, who is supposed to help them “wash” the gold.

production

Direction, script and funding

Directed by Spike Lee , who co- wrote the script with Kevin Willmott , based on a draft by Danny Bilson and Paul De Meo , who began their careers as writers on Disney's The Rocketeer years ago . Originally the title was "The Last Tour" and was about white soldiers. In their revision, Lee and Willmott kept the adventure and action elements, as did the treasure hunt, but turned all protagonists into African American and turned the whole thing into a treatise on the question of race, American history and black patriotism. Sidney Schering explains how in BlacKkKlansman Lee occasionally lets his characters wander into flaming monologues about US politics and pop culture, in which he records his tarantino-esque viewpoints for the eternity of films. According to Dietmar Dath from the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , documentaries are woven in with a relaxed, encyclopedic gesture , and you can also find out by the way that the African American Crispus Attucks was the first victim of an armed conflict in the USA. Such socially critical comments on racism and the coming to terms with US history make the film a Spike Lee history lesson, according to Peter Travers .

Every third US soldier during the Vietnam War was an African American

Commenting on the impact of the fact that almost every Hollywood war movie left out African Americans on Americans' historical image of their past, Lee said, “You are not told the real story. [...] Like many other children, I was taught at school that George Washington never lied. [...] But we were never taught that George Washington, the first President of America, had 123 slaves. That was left out. "

One of the most important things Lee wanted to say with his film was ascribed to the character Norman in a single line, who says: "We fought for this country from the beginning." This means, from the beginning, from the beginning. Not too many people would know that the first American to die for this country in the Revolutionary War against England was a black. Hence, it is incomprehensible to Lee when Donald Trump claims that African Americans are not patriots: “The United States of America was built on land that was stolen from Native Americans. And it was built on slavery. That is the foundation on which the land was built, and that is a fact. ”In this context, Lee also recalls that at the height of the Vietnam War, African Americans made up a third of the total armed forces in Vietnam, when they were only 10 percent in of the US population were represented.

While Amazon Studios was the only production company with Lee's Chi-Raq that said yes to his project, with Da 5 Bloods only Netflix was interested in a collaboration, which is why he was now making his first film with this streaming service.

Cast and filming

Chadwick Boseman plays in flashbacks Norman, one of the "Bloods" and their former troop leader. British actor Delroy Lindo played Paul, Isiah Whitlock Jr. played Melvin, Clarke Peters played Otis and Norm Lewis played Eddie. The names of these characters are based on the members of the Afro-American soul band The Temptations , Paul Williams , Melvin Franklin , Otis Williams and Eddie Kendricks . The four actors can also be seen in the flashbacks in these roles, a decision made financially by Lee, but which gives these scenes an impressionistic feel and suggests that the men have been reliving these battles in their own minds since then, according to Peter Debruge from Variety . Also starring are Jonathan Majors in the role of Paul's son David and Paul Walter Hauser and Jasper Pääkkönen in the roles of LAMB Leaders Simon and Seppo seen. Apart from the LAMB employees Simon and Seppo, the white figures in the film are French, which is reminiscent of an earlier chapter of colonial exploitation in the region that is only addressed tangentially, says Peter Debruge. Jean Reno plays the seedy entrepreneur Desroche, Mélanie Thierry the LAMB director Hedy Bouvier.

Filming started in March 2019. For three months the film was shot in Ho Chi Minh City and Bangkok , but mostly in the Thai province and its capital Chiang Mai . The different temporal levels in the film are visually represented by different aspect ratios and by different color saturations. For the flashbacks to the time of the Vietnam War, 16mm film material was used, in other scenes iPhone recordings were used. Lucas Barwenczik from the film service remarks that the flashbacks look like an old war film: "a little grainy , like looking through the camera of Vittorio Storaro or Robert Richardson ."

Film music and playlist

The film music was composed by Terence Blanchard . The album with the film music, which comprises a total of 21 pieces of music, was released for download on May 29, 2020 by Milan Records. Because the film not only references earlier war films and especially Vietnam War films, but also pays homage to Apocalypse Now , Lee also uses Richard Wagner's Valkyries Ride in his film . The Chambers Brothers song Time Has Come Today is also used. The film also features a number of songs by Marvin Gaye , mostly from the 1971 album What's Going On , which documented the return of black soldiers from the war to poverty the communities for which they allegedly fought , Drug addiction, unemployment and violence were found tainted. These pieces of music and songs can be found, in addition to some pieces by Blanchard and comments by the director, in the playlist presented by Lee on Spotify at the start of the film. The film also uses a Greek choir (through Hanoi Hannah ).

Director Spike Lee

Peter Debruge of Variety wrote, the Trojan horse of a treasure hunt in an adventure film visit the Lee Spike the mindset of black soldiers who fought at a time for their land, were suppressed as African Americans at home. With one foot in the past and the other in the Black Lives Matter movement, Lee interweaves strong social criticism with fleeting B-movie thrills. Journalists have made it their business to label Da 5 Bloods as "timely" as its publication coincides with the nationwide protests that arose spontaneously after the death of George Floyd , Debruge said. This is true, but Lee has always been ahead of his time and with Do the Right Thing 1989 anticipated the deaths of Floyd and Eric Garner from suffocation in the recent past. Also , since 5 Bloods is a film of an artist who is committed to deliver political messages through popular entertainment. Instead of limiting its criticism to the USA, the film also deals with the racism in today's Vietnam when Otis learns how his daughter was ostracized there because of the color of her skin, which reminds Debruge of the central theme of the musical Miss Saigon . Black soldiers would fit into the equation "war is money and money is war" in Da 5 Bloods , Norman concluded, in which the film was a reminder of how the US economic system was built on their backs, a message that was then too repeated by protesters from the Black Lives Matter movement. Lee anticipated their anger and restored the position of these overlooked Americans in history, and it was difficult to imagine a more resonant film in these times .

Dietmar Dath from the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung emphasizes in his criticism the strained, disturbed, injured relationship between Paul, who was monstrously damaged by fate, and his son David, which, as a micrograph of the historical dimension of morality, is one of the essential narrative strands of the film: “Freedom and There is only dignity for the disenfranchised in combat, but America's black men always had to fight, if not for themselves, then for the rule of their oppressors. ” Delroy Lindo brings Paul to life as if his own depended on it, and finally speaks at the end his difficult path an apocalyptic monologue that will go down in film history. This giant of pain, hatred and maddened humor is probably the greatest figure that the gifted figure shaper Spike Lee has ever staged, according to Dath: “Not a hero, not a villain, but a lifelong cheated person who has his right that he demands , can no longer distinguish from his revenge on everything and everyone because one has raped his soul. "The film could not tame him, just hold him in the picture, as a living abbreviation of the tragedy of humiliated and brutalized black masculinity in America for four hundred years .

In mid-June 2020, the film landed in the top 10 of the German Netflix charts.
