Daniel Díaz Torres (born December 31, 1948 in Havana ; † September 16, 2013 there ) was a Cuban film director . He has been one of the most important Cuban filmmakers since the 1980s. His social satirical film Alicia in the Place of Miracles made him internationally known.

Live and act

Daniel Díaz Torres was born in Havana in 1948. Until his graduation in 1970 he studied political science at the University of Havana . In 1968 he began to work at the Information Center of the Cuban Film Institute (ICAIC), where he wrote articles on Cuban cinema and film reviews. From 1971 Díaz Torres worked as an assistant director . At the same time he took university courses on film history and film technology and led cinema workshops in various countries. From 1975 Díaz Torres made documentaries and was from then until 1981 under Santiago Álvarez deputy responsible for the Cuban newsreel of the ICAIC.

Daniel Díaz Torres made his first feature film in 1984 with Jíbaro based on a script by Norberto Fuentes . In 1986 the retro comedy Otra mujer came out, which was set in the 1970s. The screenplay for this film was written by Jesús Díaz , the cameraman was Raúl Pérez Ureta , with whom he later made three more feature films.

With the social satirical film Alicia im Ort der Wunder , which premiered at the Berlinale in 1991 and was awarded the Peace Prize, he attracted national and international attention. In Cuba itself, the film was temporarily banned, although it was approved by those responsible at the state film institute during production in the late 1980s. In 1991, shortly after the collapse of the Eastern Bloc and at the beginning of the so-called special period , the ideological reins were tightened. The film tells the absurd experiences of an idealistic young woman in a strange place, whose involuntary residents are harassed by an authoritarian sanatorium director, in which the audience could undoubtedly recognize features of the Máximo Líder Fidel Castro . Two days after the start of the film, thugs from the "rapid reaction force" appeared in the cinema and threatened those viewers who laughed. The film was canceled. As a result, the Film Institute was separated from the Ministry of Culture and placed directly under the Communist Party .

This was followed by the bank robbery comedy Quiéreme y verás ... (1994), which won the main prize at the Freiburg Film Festival . The comedy Kleines Tropikana , co-produced with German and Spanish partners , won the big jury award at the Festival of New Latin American Film in Havana, as well as other prizes at the Innsbruck (IFFI) and Rotterdam (IFFR) festivals .

His last film Lies in Cuban (La película de Ana) won three awards at the Havana Film Festival in December 2012, including that for the best screenplay written by Díaz Torres with Eduardo del Llano . Shortly afterwards, the Austrian-Cuban co-production was voted the best film of the year by the Association of Cuban Film Critics.

Díaz Torres was one of the founders of the International College for Film and Television (EICTV) in San Antonio de los Baños , where he was a lecturer in the directing department.

Daniel Díaz Torres died of cancer on September 16, 2013.
