Daniel Lindsay Russell (born August 7, 1845 in Brunswick County , North Carolina , †  May 14, 1908 in Wilmington , North Carolina) was an American politician and the 49th governor of the state of North Carolina.

Early years and military service

Daniel Russell was born on a plantation in Brunswick County and initially received a private school education. He later attended Bingham School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . When the civil war broke out , he left the university to join the army of the southern states . There he made it to the captain.

Political rise

During the war he became a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives , where he remained from 1864 to 1866. During this time he also studied law. After his admission to the bar in 1866, he opened a practice in Wilmington. In 1868 he became a judge in the fourth judicial district of his state. He held this position until 1874. In 1876 he sat again as a Republican in the North Carolina Parliament before he became a member of the US House of Representatives between 1879 and 1881 . In 1876 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Cincinnati , where Rutherford B. Hayes was nominated as a presidential candidate.

North Carolina Governor

For the upcoming gubernatorial elections in 1896, Russell was nominated by his party as the top candidate. He won the election against the Democrat Cyrus B. Watson. His tenure began on January 12, 1897 and ended four years later on January 15, 1901. During this time, the budget for education was increased and anti-monopoly laws were passed. The Spanish-American War of 1898 , for which North Carolina also had to deploy troops , also fell during this period . Due to the brevity of the war, however, the effects on the state were minor.

After the end of his tenure, Russell returned to his legal work and personal interests. He died in May 1908. He was married to Sarah Amanda Sanders.
