Roy Asberry Cooper III (born June 13, 1957 in Nashville , Nash County , North Carolina ) is an American politician . He has been the governor of the state of North Carolina since January 1, 2017 .

Career

Roy Cooper studied at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill until 1979 . After completing a law degree at the same university and being admitted to the bar in 1982, he began to work in this profession.

Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . From 1987 to 1991 he was a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives , and from 1991 to 2000 he was a member of the State Senate . Since 2000 he has been the Attorney General of North Carolina. In his home country he is also a member of numerous organizations and associations. In 2016, Roy Cooper ran for governor of North Carolina against Republican incumbent Pat McCrory . The election result was very close. Cooper got 49.02 percent of the vote, while McCrory got 48.80 percent. The difference was 10,263 votes; the result was only known on December 5, 2016. Roy Cooper was able to take up his new office on January 1, 2017.
