Darlington Eglakhian Omodiagbe (born July 2, 1978 in Warri ) is a retired Nigerian soccer player . He is the first professional footballer in Germany to be relegated five times in a row.

Career

Omodiagbe started his professional career in 1995 at Port Harcourt Sharks in Nigeria. In 1997 he moved to Poland (Gdańsk and Łódź). From 1999 to 2002 he played alternately with several German and Polish clubs ( FC Gütersloh , ŁKS Łódź , Hannover 96 , MSV Duisburg , Piotrków Trybunalski). After Gütersloh's relegation he moved to Hannover 96. In 2000, against the will of the club, he accepted the invitation to an international match for the Nigerian U-23s, but only played five minutes. When he returned to Hanover, he was expelled from the regular eleven. He then moved to MSV Duisburg, where Wolfgang Frank was a trainer. When Frank was fired after eight games, Omodiagbe lost his regular place. After he was only used twice in the second half of the season, his contract was not extended at the end of the season.

After a short stay abroad, Omodiagbe played again in 2002 under Wolfgang Frank at SpVgg Unterhaching in the Regionalliga Süd. He initially played in attacking midfield and also in attack. In Unterhaching he moved to defensive midfield, and from the 2004/05 season he played in central defense. Since the departure of Necat Aygün he was the strongest defender at Haching. For his 150th game in the 2nd Bundesliga on February 25, 2007 in Kaiserslautern, he was also the captain of SpVgg Unterhaching for the first time in a competitive game .

After Unterhaching's relegation in 2007, Omodiagbe moved to FC Carl Zeiss Jena for the 2007/08 season . After he was relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga with this team, he moved to VfL Osnabrück in summer 2008 . There he could not prevent VfL's relegation despite good performances. In 2009 he signed a new contract with the second division club Rot Weiss Ahlen . The contract ran until the end of the 2010/11 season. With the relegation of Ahlen, his contract was terminated at the end of the 2009/10 season . Omodiagbe then signed a contract with Wacker Burghausen in the 3rd division, with which he also ended the 2010/11 season in a relegation zone, but remained in the 3rd division due to the bankruptcy of Rot Weiss Ahlen. In the 2013-14 season, Omodiagbe rose for the fifth time in five years and ended his active career.

Oddities

The relegation with Burghausen from the 3rd division was the fifth in a row for Omodiagbe. The Nigerian had previously been relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga with SpVgg Unterhaching (2007), FC Carl Zeiss Jena (2008), VfL Osnabrück (2009) and Rot Weiss Ahlen (2010) . Overall, it was the sixth relegation for Omodiagbe with six different clubs. In 1999 he rose with FC Gütersloh for the first time from the 2nd division.
