Das Bad auf der Tenne is a German-Austrian comedy film by Paul Martin from 1956.

action

Evelyn Korff spends a long time in the bathtub again , reading the book Das Bad auf der Tenne . Her husband Peter is interested in the content of the story and Evelyn tells him:

In the village of Terbrügg in 1652, love goes haywire: clerk Jan loves the grandmaid Stin, but hesitates to marry because he doesn't know whether her breast is big or small. Sculptor Ule, who is new to the village, secretly loves the beautiful Saskia, daughter of master miller Klas, who, however, wants to become mayor and is therefore looking for a suitable match for the daughter. Ule and Saskia therefore only meet in secret. The marriage of Mayor Hendrick and his wife Antje is solid.

To beautify the place, the mayor of Ule has commissioned a woman sculpture to decorate the village fountain. To unveil the wooden figure, governor Don Fernando arrives, who actually wants to travel on quickly, but thinks about it when he sees Antje. He has brought a wooden bathtub with him and is taking a bath, to the amazement of the villagers. The villagers are even more astonished when the unveiling of the wooden figure is canceled: while secretly looking at the figure, the municipal councils have discovered that the female figure is naked and want to avoid a scandal. While the councilors begin to puzzle over who Ule could have modeled for the figure, Ule and Antje try to convince the governor to put up or not to put up the figure. The next day, Don Fernando announced his decision: Ule should carve around the figure over the next eight days so that the offensive areas are covered. He will then see the result for himself in eight days. Until then, Antje can also decide whether she wants to follow him as a lover or not. Don Fernando leaves, but the bathtub remains in the village as a present for Antje.

Hendrick has long known that Saskia Ule acted as a model because he observed them both at a secret meeting. The rest of the community councils are still brooding, but suspect Antje as a template. According to Hendrick's will, she is not allowed to bathe in the house and therefore demonstratively places the tub on the threshing floor of the nearby barn. Jan announces to the local council that Antje wants to bathe on the threshing floor, and all the men finally stare through the wooden walls. In front of the outraged wives, they pass off their deed as an official act and are sure that Antje was the model. As a result, they want to call on Hendrick to resign from mayor's post. Hendrick tries to convince Saskia to admit that she was the model, but she shies away from her father's anger and denies everything.

Antje wants to teach the men of the place a lesson and has the wall of the barn painted black. Then she pours herself another bath and drapes the bathing area with towels. Again it is not she who bathes, but the young maid Nele, and all the men appear at their wives with black faces. Antje only triumphs for a short time, because in the end Hendrick is one of those exposed. Meanwhile, Saskia and Ule hold on to their love, which the meanwhile suspicious Klas has also noticed. He secretly follows Saskia with a rifle when she goes to Ule, but cannot find her in his room because she was able to hide in an astonishingly small box. The drunk Hendrick, who was excluded from the shared bedroom by the angry Antje, saw Klas go to Ule with the rifle, and went into Saskia's bedroom to warn her. The ladder to the room falls over and so Hendrick goes to sleep in Saskia's bed. She in turn gets back to her room before her father and in the end is caught by Klas in bed with Hendrick. Hendrick, now sober again, can not remember anything, but would give up the post of mayor to avoid the scandal. Antje is beside herself when she learns what is going on from Klas, and now agrees to the Don Fernando who has arrived to go with him. First Saskia tells her how everything was, and so the mayor couple reconciles. Saskia meanwhile takes her first bath on the threshing floor. At the inauguration of the new fountain figure, the revealing tape is connected to the bathtub, which means the bathtub rolls up to the fountain. In the end, Saskia is revealed to the governor as a model of the fountain figure and Don Fernando persuades Klas to agree to Saskia and Ule's marriage. Because the governor's deep love between Antje and Hendrick does not remain hidden, he leaves Terbrügg alone - with his bathtub in his luggage.

criticism

The film service found that "this second infusion of the material, more voyeuristic than burlesque, [...] does not [reach] the level of the 1943 film." "The first bathtub in a Dutch village triggers silly-erotic entanglements", wrote Cinema .
