David Baird

David Baird senior (born April 7, 1839 in County Londonderry , Ireland , †  February 25, 1927 in Camden , New Jersey ) was an Irish-Scottish- American politician ( Republican Party ) who represented the state of New Jersey in the US Senate .

Life

Born in Northern Ireland, David Baird, who was also of Scottish descent, immigrated to the United States in 1856. He was first located in Port Deposit ( Maryland ) and worked there in the wood business; In 1860 he then moved to Camden, New Jersey, where he expanded his activities to include banking. From 1876 to 1880 he was a member of Camden County 's Board of Chosen Freeholders , New Jersey's equivalent to the County Commission , which is the legislature in other states in the counties . From 1887 to 1889 he was sheriff in Camden County; he held this office again between 1895 and 1897. He was also a member of the Board of Assessors of New Jersey in 1895 and from 1901 to 1909 .

In 1910, Baird first ran for a seat in the US Senate, but he was defeated by the Democrat James Edgar Martine . On February 23, 1918, he was appointed Senator in Washington after the death of William Hughes . On November 5, 1918 he also decided the by-election for himself, after which he was a member of the Senate until March 3, 1919; He did not run for another term of office. He resumed business in Camden, where he died in 1927.

His son David was also a US Senator for New Jersey from 1929 to 1930.
