John R. McPherson

John Rhoderic McPherson (* 9. May 1833 in Livingston County , New York ; †  8. October 1897 in Jersey City ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ), of the state of New Jersey from 1877 to 1895 in the US Senate took .

After completing his academic training in New York State, John McPherson moved to Jersey City in 1859. He worked there in agriculture and in the cattle trade. From 1864 to 1870 he was a member of the city government ( Board of Aldermen ) of Jersey City, where he served as its president for three years. Between 1871 and 1973 he was a member of the New Jersey Senate ; in the presidential election of 1876 he was in the Electoral College Democratic elector for Samuel J. Tilden ; In the end, however, the Republican Rutherford B. Hayes became president .

From March 4, 1877, John McPherson took his seat in the United States Senate, having previously defeated the Republican incumbent Frederick T. Frelinghuysen , later US Secretary of State . After two re-elections in 1883 and 1889, he remained in the Senate until March 3, 1895, where he headed the Committee on Naval Affairs .
