David H. Goodell

David Harvey Goodell (born May 6, 1834 in Hillsborough , Hillsborough County , New Hampshire , † January 22, 1915 in Antrim , New Hampshire) was an American politician and governor of the state of New Hampshire from 1889 to 1891 .

Early years and political advancement

In 1841 David Goodell moved to Antrim with his parents. He attended the academies in New Hampton , Hancock and Francestown . He then studied at Brown University for a while . For health reasons, however, he dropped out of this course without a degree. After that he became a successful businessman who also made some practical inventions such as B. made an apple peeler. Then he started his own company that manufactured kitchen appliances.

Politically, Goodell was a member of the Democrats until 1863 . He then moved to the Republican Party , for which he was a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives between 1876 and 1879 . From 1876 to 1883 he was also a member of his state's Agriculture Committee. Finally, from 1883 to 1885, he was also a member of the governor's advisory board.

New Hampshire Governor

In 1888, Goodell was elected his party's candidate for governor of his state. But the choice was so tight that the decision had to be made by the legislature. The new governor took office on June 6, 1889. Goodell was a Prohibitionist and advocated for New Hampshire laws. The state banking committee became a permanent body. The governor also had to grapple with the problems of two railroad companies trying to reduce their services. David Goodell was the last governor to take office in June. His two-year term was shortened by six months and ended on January 8, 1891. Since then, the official terms of the governors of New Hampshire begin and end in January.

Another résumé

After the end of his tenure, Goodell devoted himself to his business interests and continued to fight for prohibition. He died in January 1915. Governor Goodell was married twice with a total of two children.
