Charles Henry Bell (born November 18, 1823 in Chester , Rockingham County , New Hampshire , †  November 11, 1893 in Exeter , New Hampshire) was an American politician of the Republican Party .

Life

Charles Bell was born in 1823, the youngest son of future New Hampshire Governor John Bell . His uncle Samuel Bell was also the governor of that state. His cousins ​​were also politically active: James Bell as a US Senator , Samuel Newell Bell as a member of the House of Representatives .

He graduated in 1844 at Dartmouth College , studied successful law and worked as a lawyer in Chester and Exeter . He also served as a county solicitor for ten years . He also made a name for himself as the author of a book on the history of Exeter. From 1868 to 1887 he was President of the New Hampshire Historical Society.

Bell was married twice.

Bell's political career began in 1858 when he was elected to the New Hampshire House of Representatives , which he served until 1860. That year he was also the Chamber's Speaker . From 1863 to 1864 he sat in the Senate of the state, of which he was president in 1864. There was a longer political break before he was elected US Senator by the State Parliament in March 1879; however, there was only a temporary vacancy to be bridged until the official senator was elected. Bell was not considered for this and resigned from the Senate in July when Henry William Blair was his successor.

In 1881, like his father and uncle, he was elected Governor of New Hampshire for a two-year term. In 1889 he was the New Hampshire Constitutional Convention.
