Thomas James McIntyre

Thomas James McIntyre (born February 20, 1915 in Laconia , New Hampshire , † August 8, 1992 in Palm Beach , Florida ) was an American politician.

McIntyre attended the Manlius Military School in Manlius , New York , Dartmouth College in Hanover , New Hampshire, and the Law School at Boston University . In 1940 he was admitted to the New Hampshire Supreme Court. From 1942 to 1946, McIntyre served in the US Army . When he retired from active service, he held the rank of major . He returned to his hometown and was mayor of Laconia from 1949 to 1951.

In 1954, McIntyre ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the US House of Representatives . It was not until 1962, when he was elected to the US Senate in a by-election on November 6th to fill the vacant seat of Henry Styles Bridges , that he was able to win a seat in Congress . He replaced Maurice J. Murphy , who had occupied the seat until the election of McIntyre. McIntyre represented the state of New Hampshire from November 7, 1962 to January 3, 1979 as a Democratic Senator in the US Senate. In the 1978 elections he was unable to defend his seat.

After retiring from his political career, McIntyre lived in his hometown of Laconia and in Tequesta , Florida. He died in Palm Beach in 1992 and was buried in St. Lambert Cemetery in Laconia.
