David Kohlstedt

David L. Kohlstedt (* around 1943 ) is an American geophysicist.

Kohlstedt earned his bachelor's degree from Valparaiso University in 1965 and his master's degree from the University of Illinois in 1967 , where he received his doctorate in physics in 1970. As a post-doctoral student he was at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge and from 1971 to 1975 at Michigan Technological University . He also worked at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with Christ Goetze and Bill Brace. In 1975 he became an assistant professor and later professor at Cornell University . From 1989 he was a professor at the University of Minnesota .

He experimentally investigated the deformation and kinetic behavior of rocks at high pressures and temperatures similar to those in the upper mantle and the deeper earth's crust, for example during tectonic processes in mid-ocean ridges. He found that even a small amount of water leads to a considerable reduction in viscosity and is essential for the formation of convection currents in the Earth's interior, which lead to plate tectonics, which are missing on the arid Venus, for example. Likewise, even a small proportion of molten material changes to migration processes that lead to the self-organization of shear zones enriched with melt and to transport channels from the melt to the earth's surface. He also investigated the role of point defects in crystals on diffusion processes. He also dealt with flow laws for ice with application in glacier dynamics .

Among other things, he was visiting scholar at the Australian National University , the Leibniz University Hannover (1984), in 2005 as Moore Scholar at Caltech and in 1993/94 with a Humboldt Research Award at the University of Bayreuth .

He also received the Hess Medal of the American Geophysical Union in 2003 and the Murchison Medal in 2009 . He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences (2009) and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2000).

David Kohlstedt is married to the science historian Sally Gregory Kohlstedt .
